Education - Expo Area - Recruitment
During the edition held on June 13, 14, and 15, 2024, for the first time at BolognaFiere, WMF presented Koders Fest: an agenda filled with events and initiatives for education and networking, dedicated exhibition areas, and recruitment services for coders, system administrators, and cloud experts.
In times of transformation like those, technical reference figures were even more crucial for a robust and healthy innovation journey. At WMF, participants had the opportunity to meet experts from around the world, covering a range of topics from frontend coding and UI/UX to backend development and cloud engineering.
Education was at the heart of Koders Fest: in stages dedicated to Cybersecurity, Front-end Coding, Backend & Cloud, Machine Learning, and UX & UI, attendees had the opportunity to hear presentations from Maximiliano Flirtman, Paolo Insogna, a Node.js TSC Member, Alessandro Vozza, and many other experts.
There were also ample opportunities for networking and digital job placement, in addition to expo areas dedicated to the most advanced technological solutions in cloud, hosting, and tools.

Harry Potter and the Elastic Semantic Search
Let's demystify Gen AI and see how we can apply it to fun, approachable solutions, with a magical twist. We'll first explore how vector embeddings and LLMs work, before we set off to build our search solution (with a live demo). Using the Elastic Python clients we first create indexes for Harry Potter characters, and film subtitles. We can import compatible 3rd party LLMs through an enriching pipeline; allowing us to add sentiment analysis and embeddings to our text. We’ll build a semantic search engine that can browse the books better than the ultimate fan.

LLMs are a High-Performance Computing problem
Language Models have witnessed remarkable advancements across diverse domains, continually scaling in size and training on increasingly expansive datasets. This progression has bestowed upon them the remarkable ability to swiftly adapt to novel tasks with minimal training data. However, the journey of training models comprising tens to hundreds of billions of parameters on vast datasets is anything but straightforward. This presentation is designed to offer comprehensive insights into the intricacies of training and deploying the most expansive neural networks

Dear Design, how much do you cost me?
How do you deal with organisations that would desperately need design, but have no budget? The problem is that a service design project that is done well, that goes deeper (read: in which research is done properly), that does not merely replicate quick solutions tried and tested elsewhere, does indeed cost money, and is something that companies with a certain turnover or size, or at least a certain programmatic intention, can certainly afford. But those who do not have those resources, or those who have them but do not feel like taking the risk and investing in something they have never done before, are left out. However, if the governing principle of all design is 'try to do better with less' then we can try to apply it also to the estimates we present and the activities we put in place, in order to be able to offer something even to small realities: this is not the road to 'low cost' design, but rather a design challenge: how can we work while maintaining quality but better negotiating the activities actually needed and making the most of the resources already available?

You don’t have to contribute to Open Source
There are amazing programmers who have zero commits in the public github repositories, yet they work with open source projects every day. Sometimes work commitments or maybe a full personal life make it hard to find time to contribute, and that’s not a problem, it shouldn’t make us feel guilty.Helping a colleague to use a technology, making it more accessible by spreading it among their links, are examples of activities that really benefit the entire ecosystem, but do not entitle them to a "badge".If you really want to contribute to open source, you should first learn what open source really means, and then we can talk about some tips on how to contribute effectively. But don’t feel "obligated" to do it. In this talk I will try to explain why.

Vanilla JS: You Might Not Need that Library
Every couple of months, a new JavaScript library is hitting the scene, each promising to fix our previous coding dilemmas. But what if we took a step back and revisited the fundamentals with good old Vanilla JS in 2024? Let's talk about embracing the simplicity and speed of development that comes with a 'vanilla' approach. This session is all about exploring how to craft rich web apps and websites using nothing but core JavaScript and browser APIs—no dependencies and all the power! If you have never created apps with Vanilla JS, now is the perfect time to understand it.We'll journey through the modern landscape of JavaScript's foundational features, which have evolved into a robust suite of tools. From Web Components to Shadow DOM, Reactivity and declarative templates, PWA APIs, reactive programming, and client-side routing, we'll uncover how to harness these powerful features you typically get from libraries. Zero trust for cloud native applications: how service mesh can help you securing workloads
We live in a brave new world of cyber attacks, state-sponsored hacking and global instability fueled by (cyber and not) wars; perimeter security is just not up to the task of securing the modern digital infrastructure. Zero Trust Security Model assumes that an enterprise-owned environment is not different or trustworthy than any non enterprise-owned environment. In this paradigm, an enterprise must assume no implicit trust and continually analyze and evaluate the risks to its assets. We will show how we can simply and scalably implement new ways to perform the necessary steps towards achieving perfect zero-trust architecture, and what entails for operations and development.

Automating Azure with Serverless Technologies
In a complex and articulated world like Azure's, it's crucial to be able to automate certain management operations. Rotating security keys, renewing expiring secrets, synchronizing services that don't have out-of-the-box synchronization modes are just some of the operations that we "must" implement in our solutions effectively and efficiently. Technologies like Azure Functions, Logic App, Event Grid come to our aid for this, providing us with a range of services that allow us to implement these tasks efficiently and cost-effectively. In this session, we will explore what events are in Azure and how they can be leveraged using Serverless technologies to achieve the desired outcome

Don’t break GraphQL, extend it!
GraphQL is powerful technology to retrieve and send complex structures from remote locations with a simple and
effective syntax. One of its perks is avoid under-fetching and over-fetching as the client specifically requests the
fields it’s interested in. But what happens if we need to enrich or customize the data set and we can’t modify the upstream GraphQL server?
Shall we break the spec? In this talk I will show you how to use the resources the GraphQL specification already gives us to solve this issue
without having to break the rules.
